South Yorkshire is home to two airports, one in Doncaster and the other between Rotherham and Sheffield. The two airports are Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Sheffield City Airport, both airports are owned and operated by Peel Holdings who also run Durham Teesside Airport, Liverpool John Lennon Airport and the Trafford Centre in Manchester. Sheffield City Airport information will now not be shown in this section as the website is due to close very soon and passenger flights have not commenced from this airport since 2002. When all the other large cities in England had airports built Sheffield opted out of the scheme and was left without an airport until 1997. The airport was built very quickly so therefore did not provide sufficient services. The airport no longer operates commercial flights due to the size of the runway. The airport is going to be closing for good on the 30th April 2008. Now that Sheffield City Airport is closed, this section will just focus on Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield International Airport. Robin Hood Airport on the other hand has the largest runway in the country outside of London. It is the only airport outside of London which could handle the Airbus A380 alongside Manchester. Robin Hood Airport opened in April 2005 and serves a number of European holiday destinations as well as flights to America. |
